Bernard M.  Greenwald
Bernard M. Greenwald, MD, age 97, of Evanston, was a leader in progressive, human focused health care, being among the first to bring fathers into the delivery rooms, instrumental in proactive health care to aid in the early detection of cervical cancer and early adopter of natural childbirth techniques. Bernie delivered over 10,000 babies during his 56 year medical career, and they are affectionately referred to as “Bernie Babies.” He was the Chief of OB/GYN Department at Lutheran General Hospital in the 60’s and started the OB/GYN Department at Skokie Valley Hospital, currently known as NorthShore University HealthSystem – Skokie Hospital. Bernie was a WWII Naval Officer serving in the Pacific Theatre. He was an accomplished photographer, avid world traveler, animal lover and was a lifelong learner; beloved husband of Betty Koenig Greenwald, nee Lipman and the late Edna Greenwald, nee Kayne; loving father of Anne (Jeremy Bloch) Greenwald, Lee “Osher” (Feliza) Greenwald and Mitch (Amy) Greenwald and Betty’s daughter Sally (Mike Novitch) Koenig Novitch; adored Grandpa Bernie of Emily, Eli, Jihelah, Naomi, Caitlin (Andy), Macabee, Emma Rose, Miles and Lowell; cherished “baby brother” of the late Bertha Ruttenberg, Bess Medintz, Sarah Kaluzna, Esther Kahn and Belle Jacobson; treasured uncle, cousin and friend to many. There will be a celebration of Bernie’s life on Saturday, September 16th at The Grove, 1421 Milwaukee Ave., Glenview, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., for additional information, send emails to abernielife@gmail.com.
