The Memorial Candle Program has been designed to help offset the costs associated with the hosting this Tribute Website in perpetuity. Through the lighting of a memorial candle, your thoughtful gesture will be recorded in the Book of Memories and the proceeds will go directly towards helping ensure that the family and friends of Barbara Newman can continue to memorialize, re-visit, interact with each other and enhance this tribute for future generations.

Growing Up 1960’s Style on Bennett Ave, South Side of Chicago

Many of our neighbors felt more like extended family members. This was not a simple coincidence of a common geography but a shared journey across the world to a special place and time where parents cared deeply for the children of their dear friends and neighbors. In this setting, Barbara Newman was not simply a lady who lived down the street. She was ‘Auntie Barbara’. When entering her house, greetings included a warm hug and a well-stocked kitchen. Her family was my family. Any advice dispensed during the course of our conversation had my best interests in mind.

When I was 10, our family moved to Lincolnwood (near north Chicago Suburb). Fortunately, Auntie Barbara and Uncle Al moved to a house a few blocks away in neighboring Skokie (with Leslie, Lisa, Jody, and Larry). Auntie Barbara continued to be the same strong, consistent, stable loving neighbor and family friend through the second part of my childhood in the 1970’s.

Now those days are long passed and life has taken me to many places and situations with ample opportunity to experience the world outside the neighborhoods of my youth. Some of the best people who shaped those neighborhoods for me are now gone. Although the passing of Barbara Newman and the health struggles of her final years sadden me, I am fortunate to have grown up with her assistance and comforted that some of Auntie Barbara lives on in my heart.
